Do Not Complain at Your Office

Do Not Complain at Your Office

Working in an established company with well-organized job structures is a privilege enjoyed by few. After you graduated from college, you might have high hopes of working in a Fortune 500 or Fortune 1000 company, or probably in one of the great leading companies in a specific industry. Who, if you are an IT grad or someone who is interested in working in IT-related field, does not want to work at a Google office, where you could play pool, eat whenever you want, sit on swings or play with company’s dog whenever you get bored? Or you might be interested working in a Red Bull office where, in addition to the fact that personal achievement is encouraged, slides and floating staircases are the common staples of the day that add to the fun factor of working?

There are great offices and companies to work with around the globe. However, if you are like many people who do not have the privilege of working in such ideal office environment that would skyrocket your performance, then you might feel compelled to show your colleagues or employers about things that could be improved for the well-being of the staff and the overall office atmosphere. However, before you throw in some ideas that you consider great to your boss, you need to consider the pros and cons of your complaint and be more careful in throwing the complaint to the company.

Make sure that your criticism is a positive one and related to the general interests of the business. Alternatively, you could simply keep your ideas to yourself if the condition is not conducive for any criticism. A friend is better than two enemies are, so if you constantly feel dissatisfied with the way things work at your company, then it might be the right time for you to accept the fact –or clean up your desk and leave in peace, and find another place that could accommodate your wishes. Here are the things that you should not complain at the office.

1. Salary
Salary is probably the major topic of most employees’ complaints. This is indeed a general problem, but it is no good if you complain about salary constantly. Wage scale is varied and it depends on various criteria, including educational background, job responsibilities and company profit. Leave it to your boss to decide who could lead the company to success. It is better that you try to give another mile to complete the tasks given. If you are still dissatisfied and it begins to affect your performance, it might be time for you to resign from the company and look for other jobs, which offer higher salary.

2. Office Facilities
Instead of complaining how come another office is equipped with state-of-the-art multimedia system, latest copy machine and automatic air purified that exudes perfumes every few minutes or so, you could hang essential oil packets near the air con and get the repair men maintain the copy machine and other facilities in your office regularly. Before you mention any complaint about your office compared to other people’s office, check your company’s financial condition and try to focus on the most effective ways to yield profit to your business –or show how much your company would benefit if your boss is willing to install a new copier or multimedia system, for example.

3. Personal Problems
Do not let personal problems get in your way. A hectic schedule and holiday season might exhaust you but it is not an excuse to show poor performance in the first days of the week or frequent absence. If your boss or your co-workers are intolerant with such things, do not complain about it. Since we live in melting pot society, occasionally there might be disagreements among you and your colleagues. Solve problems right away and address harassing issues related to gender, race, and similar things firmly before you go complain to your employer.

4. Work Load
Complaining about your work load is not a wise thing to do. You either get it done or try to finish it the smarter way, ask for a help or leave. Complain about the office atmosphere that is no longer fun, or a boss who gives demanding task, are not something you want to be heard by your colleagues. Rather than complaining about your endless task, it is better to find way to solve the problem. You could create a priority list, checklist or find out other solution to help you out. Incessant complaints lead to exasperation and will only waste your valuable time and energy.

5. The Boss
The boss might have the ultimate power in your office and you happen to dislike him/her. The way he/she does things, makes decision, talks to you or other employees might make you hate your boss. Although your opinion about him might be half-true, it does not mean that the entire office’s staff should know. Because you work for him, you have to create harmony. The best thing to address this issue is to accept the fact that you are working with him/her and you should do your best to work together. Ignore his/her personal traits/character/attitude, and concentrate on more important things, such as how you work together to complete a project.

6. Promotions
Of course, everybody wants a raise. Unfortunately, the promotion is only offered to those who are seemed to be capable of handling the task and it is not you. Well, one thing you should remember is that promotions should be achieved and not requested. Just because you have successfully completed a responsibility, it does not mean you would be fit to handle that new task. Remember that the higher you climb your career ladder, the more you will have to face bigger responsibility and risks. The key is to show your best performance, walk a mile further in every task, and be helpful to your colleagues. Ask for a promotion if you think your company needs you to manage the task and you are the right person to do that. Focus on the company’s needs and not yours, and reconsider your personal priorities before asking for a promotion so as not to sacrifice your relationship with your loved ones at home.
